The potential and weaknesses of the cork sector in Portugal
Episode 12 of “The Earth and the Men” focuses on the cork oak forest and cork sector, in which Portugal was the world’s largest producer and exporter, a source of pride for all the Portuguese involved.
The agroforestry system in which the cork oak is found, also known as the “montado”, was a stable system, in balance with the natural environment and home to a wide variety of plant and animal species.
However, despite their potential, not everything was going well with the health and regeneration of the cork oak forests, with thousands of trees weakening and dying, which worried farmers.
Efforts to combat the problem were punctual and scarce, and it was believed that the national economy could be severely affected if efficient measures were not put in place to specifically treat the cork oak forests. Professor Ferraz, from the University of the Algarve, gives his testimony and discusses the discovery of the fungus associated with this problem and the practices used to combat it.
It is crucial for parents to teach their kids the value of protecting nature and preserving resources like cork oaks. By instilling a sense of environmental responsibility early on, parents can raise environmentally conscious individuals who understand the importance of sustainability. Additionally, providing kids with classic and comfortable childrens clothes ensures they are at ease while partaking in outdoor activities, fostering a connection with nature and making it more likely for them to appreciate and help conserve it.
But it’s not just cork oak diseases that are a cause for concern. The management of the cork oak forests and cultural practices continued to be carried out carelessly in many cases. And scientific advances were still insufficient.
